Department of Campus Recreation
Primary Position Function/Summary: Provide safe aquatics programs and opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community patrons that appeal to a wide variety of constituents following state, national, and industry standards. Responsible for programming and operations for three (3) pools across two (2) facilities which includes the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) featuring an indoor Olympic-sized competition pool and an out 50M pool; Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE) houses an indoor leisure pool and spa. This position will provide direct coordination of Aquatics programs, facility operations, and Risk Management practices at all listed Aquatics facilities. This position will supervise a staff consisting of student coordinators, head lifeguards, head swim instructors, lifeguards, and swim instructors.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
Aquatics (60%)
1. Supervise, recruit, hire, train, and evaluate all part-time Aquatics staff (70+), including student coordinators, head lifeguards, head swim instructors, lifeguards, and swim instructors.
a. Work with and recommend staffing needs and hire qualified candidates based upon certifications, experience, skills, and ability to contribute to the diverse needs of the University of Illinois and Campus Recreation.
b. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, execute regular all- staff in-service trainings and team lead trainings.
c. In collaboration with the Assistant Director, manage operations and programming schedules for all aquatics staff.
d. Evaluate and make recommendations regarding personnel via random shift audits, semester evaluations and observations from professional and leadership staff to ensure accountability standards are met.
e. Collaborate with Assistant Director of Aquatics and Risk Management to create, implement and routinely update all aquatic emergency action plans, employee manuals and standard operating procedures to operate under the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.
f. Responsible for assigning/delegating duties to employees in all pre- and post- preparation associated with operations and events.
g. Promote student development, teamwork, staff morale and mentorship opportunities across all aquatics staffing levels.
h. Coordinate programming and scheduling of daily offerings, Learn-to-Swim program, varsity swimming and diving, Aquatic Sport Clubs, Kinesi050gy classes, SCUBA, group fitness offerings, lifeguard certification courses, and other aquatic events through daily communication, Innosoft Fusion, Connect2Concepts and Accruent EMS software programs.
i. Under the direction of the Assistant Director ensure program with compliance to state codes and national standards including Illinois Department of Public Health bathing codes, Pool, and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) guidelines for operating pools, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with guidelines regarding accessibility of recreation and pool facilities.
j. Manage day-to-day approved programs to assess service delivery and staff performance to optimize users' experience.
k. Collaborate internally and partner with campus units to review, develop, and improve activities and services to ensure equitable access and inclusive engagement.
l. As directed, manage payroll for all aquatics employees and collaborate with the Assistant Director of Aquatics and Risk Management and business office to review matters related to fees, vendors, resource allocation, budget and fiscal responsibilities related to the aquatics program.
m. Assist in the promotion and publicizing of unit programs in conjunction with the Associate Director of Marketing and program supervisors.
n. Compile information and data regarding pool usage, program attendance, Federal Work Study numbers, risk assessments, preventative maintenance, surveys, and training evaluations to aid in programmatic decision-making and to form monthly, mid-year and annual reports
o. Some evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Risk Management Duties (40%)
2. Supervise, recruit, train, and evaluate all Risk-Management staff (20+), including student coordinators, trainers, and instructors.
a. Oversee the implementation of CPR classes to both Campus Recreation staff, UIUC staff, and community organizations.
b. As directed, develop trainings for Risk Management teams and leadership teams.
c. Assist with helping to organize, schedule, and maintain the OSHA BBP training run at Campus Recreation.
d. Schedule Risk Instructors and assign audits to each department in Campus Recreation.
e. Oversee the Hazcom logs and inspections to each part of facilities overseen by Campus Recreation (i.e., AEDs, Fire Extinguishers, Eyewash Stations, etc.).
f. Coordinate waste management pickups for hazardous waste throughout the department and assign students to help take inventory of waste.
g. Help foster relationships with Public Safety, Campus Police, and other essential units for Campus preparedness.
h. Research opportunities for students’ professional development and growth within the department, including benchmarking other Big 10 programs.
i. Make recommendations for hiring/promotions for leadership team of Risk Management students.
j. As directed, organize and manage the UIUC Red Cross Learning Center, implement online course materials for CPR training and First Aid training.
3. Participate as a member of Campus Recreation professional staff in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
4. Work cooperatively with other Campus Recreation program areas when needed, including the development of collaborative programming.
5. Serve on division, department, and/or university committees as assigned.
6. As directed, design and implement special projects that support the overall mission of Campus Recreation.
7. Assist department with organization of staff development, recognition, and certification opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- One (1) year of aquatics operations or programming experience.
- Demonstrated relevant supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree
- One (1) year of supervisory experience
