Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Photography, assigned to Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of photography initiatives. This role is also responsible as secondary personnel for strategic videography development and implementation, that enhances the reputation, visibility, and brand of the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University.

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director for Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Marketing and Communications at Old Dominion University, this position is responsible for capturing high-quality, still images that align with the brand and marketing goals. This photographer will also be responsible for story-driven images that reflect the full range of activities at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University for use in marketing and communications efforts, including but not limited to news, public relations, marketing, social media, web, etc. This position will work closely with marketing, design, and creative teams to plan photoshoots, brainstorm concepts, and deliver compelling visual content. This role will also be assigned to execute weekly headshots in a portrait studio as well as take pictures at events and activities (assigned at various times during the week, including evenings and weekends). Primary job duties consist of preparing for editorial photoshoots, images for marketing and editorial photoshoots under the direction of the Art Director, executing headshot/portrait photography, editing images, maintaining library of archived images in a digital asset management system and packaging images as needed for final deliverables. This position requires professionalism, timeliness, responsiveness to requests and needs of campus and willingness to travel to different locations for photoshoots as needed.

This position will also serve as the second videographer for Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences with responsibilities for the strategic development of digital marketing video including acquisition and production to enhance the University’s health and medical reputation and brand image in alignment with University standards. The individual delivers videos to a diverse audience that may include key constituents, internal and external stakeholders, the community-at-large and the news media. Maximizes the quality and frequency of marketing and social media reels and videos while also developing and executing video strategy. This position presents compelling stories and key messages through video. The individual plans and facilitates studio and field-based video production, converts format of completed edited products, and performs other related duties as assigned. The salary range for this role is $66,000 to $72,000 annually.
This is an on-site role with no hybrid nor remote work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in photography, cinematography, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field or experience equivalent to a master’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of the healthcare industry and academic healthcare environment.
  • Considerable knowledge of professional photography techniques with an emphasis on visual storytelling and brand consistency.
  • Considerable knowledge of advanced photo composition principles, lighting design, color theory, exposure control, and image quality standards.
  • Working knowledge of institutional branding standards and how visual media supports reputation, visibility, and audience engagement.
  • Working knowledge of strategic planning and implementation for photography and videography initiatives aligned with organizational goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor visual assets and messaging to diverse audiences.
  • Proficient skill in digital and social media platforms, with the ability to leverage them to amplify the organization’s messaging.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Considerable experience researching, organizing, planning, coordinating, managing and directing photo production projects.
  • Considerable experience developing and implementing successful visual assets for communications and marketing needs.
  • Considerable experience with photography and videography equipment, editing software, and digital asset management systems such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and Bynder.
  • Considerable experience operating DSLR and mirrorless cameras and camera controls, ensuring the proper selection of shutter speeds, apertures, lens types, filters and effects.
  • Working experience operating photography and videography lighting equipment such as portable and studio lights, off camera flash.
  • Working experience with event photography, including capturing live event activities, in-the-moment shots, candid shots, posed shots, etc.
  • Working experience with a studio set up, including lighting, capturing headshots, working with backdrops, etc.
Preferred Qualifications

Comprehensive progressively responsible experience in photography, videography, communications, or marketing.
