Boating Education Assistant - Northwest CT Division
Introduction
The Boating Division is seeking Boating Education Assistants to engage with and educate boaters at our state boat launches. Boating Education Assistants visit state boat launches to educate boaters about clean and safe boating practices, conduct voluntary Vessel Safety Checks and Aquatic Invasive Species inspections, and report the overall boat launch condition to Boating Division staff. These positions are field-oriented, and the duty station of these positions is statewide, with DEEP Marine Headquarters located at 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT as the main office location. Boat launch duty stations are typically within a reasonable drive from your residence. The position is available from mid-May to mid-October. Work hours are primarily on weekends and holidays, with a maximum of 40 hours per week. Some evenings may be required. See Examples of Duties section for more information.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Interacting with and educating boaters at boat launches throughout the state about clean and safe boating practices including pumpout locations, Aquatic Invasive Species information, No Discharge Areas, safety equipment and life jacket use. Conducting vessel safety checks as developed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Encouraging people to become Clean Boaters by having them sign the Clean Boater Pledge and discussing the Clean Boater Action Guide. Closing the parking lot if it becomes full. Reporting on the condition of the boat launch. Light maintenance at the boat launch. Submitting weekly summaries detailing the use of the boat launch. Assisting with public outreach events, as needed. Other duties, as assigned. BEAs will receive training in all of the duties listed above.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Ability to follow instructions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of boating; Possess a driver's license; Required to work weekends and holidays; Work independently; and Be comfortable working at a boat launch during the summer months.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.� Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following: Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.� Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.� College training in a specific field.� Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific state facilities.� Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
