Payroll Specialist (1099 Contractor) for Remote Accounting Firm

Payroll Specialist (1099 – Remote) We are a fully remote accounting firm seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll Specialist to join our team as a 1099 independent contractor. This contract role is responsible for managing end-to-end payroll processing for multiple clients, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and supporting related payroll tax and sales tax filings. This position is ideal for a self-directed payroll professional who is comfortable working independently, managing multiple clients, and delivering accurate, timely payroll services in a fast-paced, remote environment. What You’ll Do • Process payroll for multiple clients across various states, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable payroll laws • Prepare, file, and remit payroll tax returns and payments on a timely basis • Handle sales tax filings, payments, and compliance across multiple jurisdictions as needed • Serve as the primary point of contact for client payroll-related questions, providing clear and professional support • Reconcile payroll reports, tax filings, and related records to ensure accuracy • Assist with onboarding new payroll clients, including payroll system setup and employee data entry • Monitor federal, state, and local payroll compliance changes and ensure clients remain in good standing • Collaborate with internal teams to support client needs while maintaining independent contractor status Contractor Requirements & Qualifications • 3+ years of payroll experience, preferably in a public accounting firm or multi-client environment • Strong knowledge of federal and state payroll laws, wage and hour regulations, and payroll tax compliance • Experience processing multi-state payroll • Familiarity with sales tax filings and multi-jurisdiction compliance is a plus • Proficiency with payroll software such as ADP, Gusto, Paychex, QuickBooks Payroll, or similar platforms • Experience with sales tax software (e.g., Avalara, TaxJar, Vertex, or state e-filing portals) preferred • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Ability to manage workload independently, set priorities, and meet deadlines • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or other payroll-related certifications a plus Job Types: Full-time, Part-time Base Pay: $28.00 - $33.00 per hour Work Location: Remote Apply tot his job
