About the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead a team within our growing infrastructure organization to support the development of Search Indexing Infrastructure at Slack. In this role, You’ll be responsible for driving a technical vision and strategy that ensures these services are reliable, efficient, scalable, and ultimately powerful to build great Search and AI products for our customers. You will blend creative product thinking with a strong technical understanding of the Search landscape to identify opportunities and guide your team in building innovative solutions that solve real user problems. A successful candidate will be an experienced engineer leader with experience in leading effective engineering teams and who is knowledgeable around the particular needs of Search infrastructure, Data pipelines, and/or high-scale infrastructure needed to support the development of Search and AI products.

Search & ML Infrastructure, part of Slack’s Core Infrastructure organization, is in the business of providing the tools, infrastructure, and the expertise, to make this product vision possible. Our group consists of three teams:

  • Search Infrastructure, which maintains our distributed search index cluster and indexing pipelines
  • Machine Learning Infrastructure, which owns services for ML & AI model training and inference
  • Machine Learning Modeling, which develops and deploys ML & AI models to use in our product


We’re looking for a manager who can lead our growing Search Infrastructure team. Specifically, you will lead an interdisciplinary team that is responsible for the development and delivery of Search indexing capabilities and Slack’s Search platform. Your objective as an engineering manager will be to ensure reliability and scalability of these services as our AI user base continues to rapidly expand, while also facilitating the development of platform capabilities that make developing Search and AI capabilities more seamless.

What you’ll do

  • Define, evolve, and communicate the team's vision, mission, and strategy across Slack.
  • Collaborate with Product, Infra, and other technical leaders to define and execute on the team's roadmap, including team growth.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Slack's Search technical domain to inform engineering possibilities and drive creative technical solutions.
  • Mentor and coach engineers to foster their technical growth and leadership potential.
  • Own and drive the successful execution of projects.
  • Partner effectively with other engineering leaders across the organization to solve high-priority challenges collaboratively.

What you should have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager leading software development teams.
  • Prior hands-on experience in the realm of Search Indexing, Data pipelines, Search infrastructure engineering and/or other related related areas
  • A strong understanding of modern Search practices and trends.
  • A passion for understanding technical landscapes and translating that knowledge into product possibilities in collaboration with Product and Design.
  • A strong problem-solving mindset with a track record of finding creative solutions to complex challenges.
  • The ability to navigate multiple and sometimes conflicting constraints to make timely decisions and anticipate future technical needs.
  • Excellent skills in building roadmaps and developing long-term team vision in partnership with Product Management and other engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive projects to successful completion.
  • A passion for developing engineers, providing constructive feedback, and fostering career growth.

At Salesforce, we believe in equitable compensation practices that reflect the dynamic nature of labor markets across various regions. The typical base salary range for this position is $172,500 - $260,100 annually. The range represents base salary only, and does not include company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity or benefits, as applicable.
