Summer Camp Waterfront Director

JOB OVERVIEW
The Waterfront Director is a senior member of the camp leadership team responsible for overseeing all operations, staffing, and programming across the lakefront and aquatic activity areas. This role ensures that every camper and staff member enjoys a safe, structured, and exciting experience on the water.

The Waterfront Director serves as the direct line manager for lifeguards and waterfront counselors, including those working in boating, waterski/wakeboard, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, and swimming. The position requires strong leadership, organizational skill, and a commitment to both safety and camper development.

This individual will lead orientation training, conduct in-service refreshers, and provide continuous feedback and end-of-summer appraisals for all waterfront staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Supervision

  • Directly manage a team of approximately 25 lifeguards and waterfront counselors, providing daily oversight, scheduling, and guidance.
  • Lead pre-camp orientation and certification refreshers, ensuring all staff meet or exceed American Red Cross and camp safety standards.
  • Conduct daily team briefings to communicate weather conditions, program plans, and staff coverage assignments.
  • Provide hands-on coaching and mentoring, reinforcing professionalism, safety, and camper engagement throughout the summer.
  • Complete mid-season evaluations and end-of-summer appraisals to support staff growth and maintain accountability.
  • Build and sustain a positive team culture that reflects Mah-Kee-Nac’s core values of community, care, and leadership.

Program Management

  • Oversee all lakefront programs, including:Waterskiing & Wakeboarding, Boat Operations, Canoeing & Kayaking, Sailing, and Swimming & Lifeguard Coverage
  • Develop and maintain daily schedules and rotations, ensuring full coverage, adequate rest periods, and efficient use of staff.
  • Collaborate with the Pool Director to coordinate swim testing, safety drills, and staff coverage across all aquatic areas.
  • Partner with the Program Director to integrate waterfront activities into the overall camp program and special event calendar.
  • Organize and lead special waterfront events, such as camp regattas, Green and White, Olympics or “Lake Evening Activities”.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Enforce all American Red Cross, ACA, and state safety standards across the waterfront and boating areas.
  • Conduct daily inspections of docks, boats, and activity areas to ensure all equipment is safe and functional.
  • Oversee lifeguard rotation and zone coverage to maintain constant visual supervision and readiness.
  • Lead emergency response drills and ensure all staff are trained in rescue procedures and incident documentation.
  • Serve as the primary responder for all lakefront emergencies and collaborate with camp leadership on follow-up and reporting.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work in tandem with the Pool Director to align safety standards, training, and staff communication across both aquatic areas.
  • Report directly to the Program Director, providing updates on staffing, maintenance, and program highlights.
  • Communicate regularly with Head Counselors and Division Leaders regarding camper swim progress, safety notes, and scheduling needs.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance Team to ensure watercraft and facilities are properly maintained and inspected.
  • Model positive leadership and clear communication in all interactions with campers and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Lifeguard Certification (Lifeguard Instructor, Boating Safety, or WSI Certification preferred).
  • Prior leadership experience in waterfront, aquatics, or outdoor recreation.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and risk management skills.
  • Comfort and experience with powerboats, sailboats, and small craft operations.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and motivate a diverse team of aquatic professionals.
  • Commitment to camper safety, development, and enjoyment in all waterfront programming.

TIMEFRAME & EXPECTATIONS

  • Pre-Camp (June 5–25): Conduct waterfront staff training, finalize scheduling, and confirm all certifications and safety procedures.
  • During Camp (June 25–August 9): Oversee all daily operations, manage staff, conduct feedback sessions, and maintain consistent communication with camp leadership.
  • Post-Camp: Submit program review, incident reports, and staff evaluations to the Program Director.

LOCATION

This is a residential summer camp position located at partner camps across multiple U.S. states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, California, Colorado, Wisconsin, and more. During the application process, candidates can indicate their preferred states, regions, and camp types.

Staff live and work on-site at camp for the duration of the summer. Room and board is 100% covered during the summer session. During off-season, leadership staff will typically be located near the off-season office, or may have remote working options available.

The typical US summer camp season lasts from the beginning to the middle of June until the middle to the end of August, with summer on-site duties lasting an average of 9 to 11 weeks. Vacation time after the conclusion of the camp session is typical, but may vary from program to program.
